I talk a lot about being more interested in long free jams than individual songs, but "High Time" is one of my absolute favorites, and also one of the songs where Old Jerry sounds perfect. Also has some of Hunter's finest writing, completely timeless.

It's really hard to describe the emotional world of the song created by the music, lyrics, and performance. Every simple adjective fails to capture the complexity of the experience. The tone seems mostly melancholy, but the sadness is tempered by the glimpse of transcendence in the vocal harmonies.

High Time is a beautiful song, the way the lyrics are set.

I always see Comes a Time as kind of its "twin" song, and I probably have a slight preference for Comes a Time...

I agree these songs are both part of the same musical universe, and are representative of the deep, quasi-spiritual music which Deadheads really love and seems to be exclusive to a certain few Hunter/Garcia songs. "So Many Roads" also, for me, conjures the same kind of dreamy nostalgic sadness.

"High Time" is my favorite ahead of "Comes a Time" probably because the chorus, with the high harmonies and the big emphasized drop in the bass, really triggers something unique for me. I think the verse melody of Comes a Time is more beautiful than the verse of High Time, though. I also think that Comes a Time sounds better with younger Jerry than old Jerry, but its the opposite for me with High Time.

While both are beautiful songs,I tend favor High Time.I find the 6/19/76 version of High Time to be as good as anything the band as ever played,it is just a masterpiece to my ears.I feel that both of these songs were never given the attention they deserved and therefore never were never fully realized, and that is a shame because they were two of their very best songs.

Beautiful rendition that I find hard to surpass.

LiA, I'm with you on the "twin" thing with these two songs and have enjoyed them both very much over the years. juIt seems the band had a better handle on HIGH TIME though and played it consistently just about every time. COMES A TIME on the other twin, never had that "finished" quality to it as was mentioned in another post about "working up a song" and always wanting to have done that with CAT. I bet they did it with High Time which makes it more polished and probably more of a favorite because of that.

But I prefer Comes A Time every time. The song just does it for me.

These are definitely two of my favorite tunes and it would be really hard to choose one over the other. I just love how the Dead could make such simple songs so emotional and powerful. Although I agree with a previous poster about High Time being more polished and spot on more often, I have to say I would choose Comes a Time in a close race. It was the first Jerry ballad that I really fell in love with and listened to over and over so I have a soft spot for it. Plus when they opened it up at the end and got it right that jam could be a thing of beauty.

Love em both - but one more vote for Comes a Time - Always get the same feeling that I get from a good Mission in the Rain

Ooooh. That is a GREAT comparison. Some kind of timeless-ness that doesn't place it anywhere or anywhen just - what it is.

Good Call.

An easy comparison would be 11/1/85 Richmond, VA (Dicks Picks 31). Both of these gems are in the second set (disc 2) and both are great performances. The pre-drums set list is so sleepy, but very soulful and dreamy.

The "Comes A Time" has a great magic moment at the end where the jam kind of falls apart and then comes back together beautifully.

I definitely prefer Comes a Time. For some reason High Time never resonated with me the way it does with most listeners.

This is very interesting, because Comes a Time does absolutely nothing for me. Nothing at all. It's one song I just have no interest in or feeling for. High Time is beautiful ... I can't understand the comparison.

You got that right...I cannot even understand the discussion about the pairing, save vague musical similarities? To me, HTime is such a poignant, singular one on one love song, love gone bad, but finding its way, and Catime is so much more of the meaning of life, opportunity, blah, blah, blah. Am I missing something? Don't mean to rag on those that like it, and those that prefer latter HTimes, but even Jerry admitted it was too hard to sing HT "right", and by all accts, the studio is the ONLY one, on his recommendation (ie, by defn since then he could work on it til he got just the sound he wanted, presumably).

How about for a moment not weighing the ‘performance’ of these two songs and just take a look at the lyrical and musical artistry that radiates from their composition. I think the heart of the matter (are these good songs?) is purely resolved by the grand emotional propensity that they convey. I can readily identify with either – and that is a testament perhaps to my own personal struggles with loss, regret, hope, redemption – whatever each of us might find Hunter to be expressing in his lyric (and Jerry with his delivery.) So, yes, I believe you are missing something! For me, Comes A Time really hits home and is one of those remarkable and beautiful songs that make the Hunter/Garcia canon so dear to my heart. edit - I just realized that your “am I missing something’ comment was directed at HT, so I offer an apology if one is necessary. I knew High Time from an early age, via Workingman’s of course, and that rendition will always satisfy.:) But it is apparent that we all get something a bit different from the recorded performances.

No, you had it right, D; and yes, your notion of the lyrical qualities is spot on...my pt was the two songs are very different, in my view. HT, the one I love, is a one on one love song, CaT, a "meaning of life" (partial love) song, if that makes sense. I never thought of them as similar other than cadence, etc. So, my "missing something?" was I love HT, but CaT doesn't do much for me, and wouldn't have paired them in some discussion, myself. And both are hard to sing, but the studio HT is great.

Hope that clears it up.

In ICU I had a vision of Garcia with his purple paisley sweater - like, an epiphony of the 6th dimension... he lives... the party goes ondon't fret... there's a party goin' on...
well, then I woke up. And my R.N. offered me Phil Lesh's book, but I wouldn't take it... she was beautiful and so much younger than I. I wanted her to have it.

God knows there is a grateful dead....

Basically agree; and the studio version is so canonical, to me, that I don't really even have an interest in comparing live versions! It's a small masterpiece.

Funny because i have been listening to Workingman's a lot recently and those were my thoughts as well. Why bother listening to any other version of this song? I can't think of a live one a like better. However my vote still goes to Comes A Time.

Well, that does it! No backing on BEW + JS then!

(I never thought Jerry could pull off the vocals on CaTime...does it on HT in studio, just, but not close enough on the other to my biased ears. IMnotsoHO.)

I love Comes a Time; it seems timeless to me, whereas what I like in High Time is somehow more time-related ... it seems to have a kind of 70s sensibility. I like them both, but Comes a Time is just so transcendent.

Yes, I think you really hit the nail on the head! There is just something really stirring about the simplistic elegance (lyrically speaking) of this song. Not to mention the fantastic, jazzy jams that could emerge from it...
